Tips to Save Money on Fiji Car Rental

  • Some of Fiji’s local car rental companies do cheaper daily rates the longer you rent, such as Angels Rental Cars and Thrifty – keep an eye out for these deals if you’re renting for a week

The Price of Budget Cars

The cheapest cars to rent in Fiji are hatchback small to medium cars. While typically the oldest cars in the fleet, they are good enough to get you around the main roads of Fiji with ease. Look out for car rental companies listing cars as “Compact”, “Economy” or “Group 1” for the cheapest cars.

Small Car Typical Prices

The typical small car in Fiji is a Perodua Viva, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Getz, Toyota Yaris or something similar. Prices have been known to be as little as FJ$65/day to around FJ$170 a day, with the average being FJ$140/day.

Medium Car Typical Prices

Medium-sized cars, such as a Toyota Belta, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Vios or something similar will cost between FJ$85 to FJ$180/day.

The Price of SUV and 4WD Vehicles

4WD vehicles and SUVs with high clearance are a good idea if you plan to venture off the main roads of Fiji, perhaps into the islands’ interiors using the dirt and gravel roads.

SUV Typical Prices

More robust cars like SUVs, with models such as a Toyota Rav4, Hyundai Santa Fe or something similar, usually price in at FJ$180-$220/day.

4WD Typical Prices

If you’re planning to get off the beaten track, get extra control with a 4WD vehicle, such as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner or something similar. Prices range from FJ$200 to FJ$280 a day.

The Price of Premium Cars

Travel in style around Fiji by renting a more modern vehicle. There are some more modern vehicles available in Fiji if you’re willing to pay a premium.

Premium Car Typical Prices

For something a little more upscale than what we’ve mentioned so far, such as a Toyota Camry, Volkswagon Vento or something similar, prices are around FJ$150-$250/day.

The Price of Vans

Vans in Fiji either refer to a people-mover, such as an 8-seater car, or a minivan fitting up to 7-8 passengers.

People-Mover Typical Price

For a people-mover, such as a Toyota Noah, Toyota Innova or something similar, expect to pay around FJ$150-$220/day.

Minivan Typical Price

For full-size vans, such as a Toyota Hiace, expect to pay FJ$180-$220/day.

Additional Costs for Hiring a Vehicle

Of course, there are always other costs associated with hiring a vehicle, which is as follows…

Insurance

Most of Fiji’s car rental companies either have mandatory insurance included in the daily rate or ask to pay an additional mandatory fee of usually around FJ$15/day. Some car rental companies have additional liability insurance or something similar as an optional add-on to reduce the excess amount, which typically costs FJ$15-$35/day, depending on the vehicle.

Petrol

Petrol in Fiji is around FJ$2.19 a litre, while diesel is around FJ$1.87 (2020).

Additional Driver

To add another named driver to the rental agreement, there is typically a fee of around FJ$8/day.

Unlimited Kilometres

While almost all of Fiji’s car rentals have no charge for the number of kilometres you travel, rentals such as Thrifty Car Rental incur surcharges once hires have exceeded 300km (186 miles). Once over the prescribed kilometres, renters will be charged 45c-70c per km depending on the vehicle type.

Out of Hours Service

Car rental companies tend to have long opening hours, especially near Nadi International Airport where it’s common to see opening hours of 5am to 10pm Monday to Sunday. However, some of the car rental companies elsewhere are likely to have shorter hours, where pick-up or drop-off outside of their office hours generally incur a charge of around FJ$25 per hour.
