3 Tips for Making Your Car Rental Budget for Fiji

Before we get started on the cost of car rental in Fiji, here are a few quick tips and things to consider when making your car rental budget.

  1. Daily rental rates are often lower if hiring for 3,5,7,14+ days
  2. Having your car delivered to Nadi International Airport usually costs less than an airport transfer (see The Cheapest Airport Transfers in Fiji)
  3. Consider whether it is worth paying extra for insurance. It is mandatory in Fiji for basic insurance to be included in the daily car rental rate. When paying for insurance in Fiji, all you are paying for is an “excess reducer”, i.e. having to pay less if the car were to get damaged. You are not paying for a “better” insurance policy, per se…

The Price of Budget Cars

Budget cars are a popular category of rental vehicles in Fiji for obvious reasons. Most of the roads that visitors use are well-maintained, and local speed limits are relatively low, making your standard town or touring car suitable.

Cars in a car rental company’s “Compact”, “Economy” or “Group 1” category are likely to be either compact cars and/or old models. The latter may come with a few minor issues; a window that doesn’t open properly, a faulty radio, etc. Although it’s unlikely that the vehicle will break down, as rental vehicles are usually maintained to a higher standard than personal vehicles, it’s more of a risk with old models. With this in mind, you may want to consider a company that also offers roadside assistance.

The Cost of Hiring a Compact Car

The typical small car in Fiji is a Perodua Viva, Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Getz, Toyota Yaris or something similar. Daily rates are usually FJ$80-$130.

The Cost of Hiring a Budget Medium Car

Medium-sized cars, such as a Toyota Belta, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Accent, Toyota Vios or something similar, will cost between FJ$130 to FJ$180/day.

The Price of SUV and 4WD Vehicles

SUVs (sports utility vehicles) are a popular category of vehicles for rent in Fiji. With high clearance, these vehicles can tackle most inland roads to villages with popular attractions, for instance, Abaca in the Koroyanitu National Park, Narara on the Suncoast or even parking up your driveway in Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Compact SUVs like Toyota Rav4 are usually your most affordable option at the expense of less room, while mid-range SUVs like Hyundais are a better option for groups of 3-5 and families.

If you want to show off in Fiji, it’s usually done in a pickup truck, also known as a ute. Most come with four-wheel-drive, while many also have manual transmission. The set-up is a bit much for where most tourists want to go. Otherwise, these gas-guzzlers are more likely to guzzle your travel budget than prove useful during your trip in Fiji.

That being said, those who need a 4WD know who they are, so be prepared to pay a premium rental rate for pickup trucks/utes in Fiji.

The Cost of Hiring an SUV

More robust cars like SUVs, with models such as a Toyota Rav4, Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, or something similar, are usually priced at FJ$150-$300/day.

The Cost of Hiring a Pickup Truck/Ute

If you’re planning to get off the beaten track, get extra control with a 4WD vehicle, such as a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Fortuner or something similar. Prices range from FJ$225 to FJ$300 a day.
