Self-Catering as a Vegan or Vegetarian in Fiji

Finding vegan ingredients in Fiji is easy, thanks to the well-stocked grocery stores, markets and roadside market stalls found across Fiji’s towns. Get to the smaller and less populated islands of Fiji’s outer islands or even rural inland villages on the larger islands, and you will find little to no shops or markets. If you are going to any outer islands or remote areas, such as the Mamanuca Islands, Yasawa Islands, outer Lomaiviti Islands, Kadavu or the eastern end of Vanua Levu, it’s best to take any vegan or vegetarian snacks with you.

As for other staples, such as rice, bread, etc., there are also plenty of convenience stores in Fiji’s towns. They offer the basics, but you tend to only find vegan substitute foods, like almond/soy milk or vegan snacks, in tourist centres like Denarau and Nadi. For these items, it’s best to bring your own from home – see Taking Food to Fiji: What You Need to Know. We go into more detail about what to expect from grocery stores and supermarkets in A Guide to Supermarkets & Food Shopping in Fiji.

All you need with your vegan or vegetarian ingredients is a place to cook them! Check out the 10 Best Self-Catering Accommodations in Fiji for our top picks.
