If you’re like us then the first thing you want to do when hitting a new city is to try the local cuisine! It’s even better when sampling the food barely takes you over FJ$20! In Suva, Fiji’s capital city on the island of Viti Levu, there’s an array of cheap eats out there waiting to be crunched/chewed/sucked/gobbled, so with that in mind we have put this quick list together of some of the best cheap eats in Suva!

5 Tips on Saving Money on Food in Suva

Cheap Eats in Suva – $10 and Under

If you’re looking for any cheap eats in Suva for under FJ$10 then your go-to are the curry houses. Indian food in Fiji is notoriously cheap, so you can definitely eat like a king in Suva on the cheap. Otherwise, you can rely on a few cheap bakeries and fast-food restaurants for something a little less spicy.

Super Cheap Indian Restaurants in Suva

Curry House (Waimanu Road & Raojibhai Patel Street) is a great place to eat in or out for a cheap lunch or early dinner, with most of their curries barely reaching the FJ$10 mark!

Another curry house we love is Singh’s Curry House (Gordon Street) with full meals including a roti, curry, salad and dahl for around FJ$10!

Some super cheap vegetarian curries can be found at Ashiyana (Victoria Parade). Choose from around seven different vegetarian curries for FJ$10 and under. Their meat main courses aren’t too stiff either ranging from FJ$11 to $16.50.

Super Cheap International Restaurants in Suva

For some traditional Fijian-style treats at a good price, head to The Old Mill Cottage (Carnarvon Street). While they serve plenty of dishes on the 10 Unique Foods in Fiji You Have to Try, their Palusami is all super cheap and yummy for FJ$8 and under.

For a quick and cheap on-the-go snack, head to the Hot Bread Kitchen (Scott Street). The Fiji bakery chain serves meat pies for FJ$5, desserts for under FJ$2, sandwiches for around FJ$5.20 and much more.

Yes, they even have McDonald’s (Laucala Bay Road) in Fiji with small meals in their “Classic Favourites” for under FJ$10. For example, a cheeseburger will set you back about FJ$8.95 for a medium cheeseburger meal or FJ$7.45 for a small cheeseburger meal.

Cheap Eats in Suva – $11-$20

The FJ$11-$20 price range is where you’ll find the most variety in your cheap eats in Suva. There’s everything from Indian restaurants to Chinese restaurants to great burger joints. Vegetarian options are always an easy way to keep the costs down.

Cheap Asian Restaurants in Suva

For great value vegetarian Indian meals, head to one of the Govinda’s Vegetarian Restaurants (Marks Street, Sports City on Laucala Bay Road & Renwick Road) for their FJ$15 vegetable thali and soft drink! For more Indo-Fijian delights, check out Maya Dhaba (Victoria Parade) with most of their mains being around the FJ$15 mark. It provides a more “up-market” restaurant feel should you be looking for a sit-down dining experience. Visit on a Sunday and you’ll be able to order some of their Sunday specials for under FJ$10.

For a great selection of Chinese dishes, like yum-cha, try the Ming Du Restaurant (Victoria Parade) with buffet food for around FJ$10-$20.

Cheap International Restaurants in Suva

Governor’s (Knolly Street) is a dining experience on everyone’s list when they come to Suva, but if you want to do it on the cheap then your best option is to hit the breakfast menu. We like their Solomon Islands Style breakfasts for FJ$18.50, their vegetarian frittatas for FJ$19 and a range of pancakes and French toast for under FJ$16.

Part of a catering school, Pacific Fusion Restaurant (University of the South Pacific, Laucala Bay Road) is open Tuesdays and Wednesdays for morning tea and lunch. You can easily get a three-course meal for under FJ$20. To give you an idea, lunch mains like ratatouille or tortellini dishes are priced around FJ$8. Plus, morning tea cakes are a measly FJ$3 for some real treats! Don’t miss out – but it’s best to book your place.

Bad Dog Cafe (McArthur Street) is your go-to restaurant if you have plenty of people in your party to please. They have a huge range of international foods to keep everyone happy. As for cheap eats, try their lunch specials for around FJ$20 for a two-course meal. On an evening try one of their sashimi plates or another platter for FJ$17. If you’re lucky enough to get a table on a Wednesday, you’ll be treated to half-price pizzas, working out to be around FJ$10-$14 a pizza!

For lunch, stop by the cleverly named Bulaccino Cafe (Grantham Road) for their Viti Bowls filled with tropical goodness for FJ$20 and under. Their FJ$5.50 wraps are also worth trying.

Cheap Burger Joints in Suva

If burgers are what you crave, then set your sights on The Gallery (Royal Suva Yacht Club) with their gourmet burger menu ranging from FJ$10 to FJ$15! Just add fries for FJ$5. Their breakfast burgers are pretty damn good too for FJ$10 – the perfect hangover cure.

For more great burgers try Cafe Victoria (Corner of Joske and Gordon Street). They do Western-style food and do it well, with a range of FJ$10-$15 burgers, FJ$13 chicken and chips, FJ$11-$15.50 fish and chips, FJ$8.50-$13.50 sandwiches, an FJ$20 “health and healing menu”, an FJ$20 vegetarian menu and Fj$14-$15 salads.
