Which Phone Network to Choose in Fiji
Replace expensive roaming bills with a local SIM Card in Fiji! Let’s be honest, we need to spend some time on our phones, even when we’re on “Fiji time“. Those poolside selfies are not going to post themselves! When you can buy 2 GB of data for free, why not?!
With that in mind, we have come up with a few comparisons so you can choose the right SIM card in Fiji with the right plan for you.
Table of Contents
Who are the Phone Network Providers in Fiji?
There are two main phone networks in Fiji: Vodafone and Digicel. While both offer similar coverage across the islands, their prices and bundles are slightly different.
Although international SIM cards and eSIMs exist for Fiji, these are significantly more expensive than the plans offered by the local phone networks. Therefore, we won’t try to sell you any bogus SIM cards on this website. You’re welcome!

Pros and Cons of Different Phone Options for Travellers in Fiji
Choosing the right phone option for your Fijian adventure can be a bit of a puzzle, but don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! We’ve done the legwork (or should we say “finger-work”?) to bring you a comprehensive comparison of your communication choices.
The table below outlines the pros and cons of various phone options available to travellers in Fiji, based on our on-the-ground research conducted this year. We’ll explore each choice in more detail later in the guide, so think of this as a preview for the wealth of phone-related insights to come!

Comparing Digicel and Vodafone Tourist SIM Plans
While tourist SIM plans may not be the cheapest option available, they offer unbeatable convenience for travellers arriving in Fiji. You can easily grab one from the airport, sparing you the hassle of searching for a local provider.
These plans typically include a generous amount of data and require minimal paperwork compared to local plans (don’t worry, we’ll cover those later in this guide).
If you’re part of the 5% of visitors who need a bit more from their mobile plan, tourist SIMs might be just the ticket.
However, it’s worth noting that neither Digicel nor Vodafone includes SMS text in their tourist plans. Any texts or overages will be charged to your credit. Vodafone includes some credit with their plan, while Digicel doesn’t. So, if you’re a text addict, you might want to add about FJ$5 credit for texts.
These tourist plans primarily focus on data, catering to the modern traveller’s need to stay connected, share their adventures on social media, and navigate the beautiful Fijian islands with ease.

Phone Coverage in Fiji
Digicel and Vodafone both have very similar coverage across Fiji. As you might expect, the strongest coverage is in the most populated areas of Fiji.
Vodafone has a stronger coverage in the northern Yasawa Islands (see Is There Mobile Phone Reception in the Yasawas Islands?) and around Vanua Levu. Digicel has stronger coverage in some parts of inland Viti Levu.
4G/LTE is available in the main towns of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, where Vodafone’s coverage is a bit more extensive than Digicel. The outer islands and more remote parts of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu have 2/3G coverage.

Is There 5G in Fiji?
Both Vodafone and Digicel are working hard to bring 5G to Fiji. In fact, a Digicel representative told us in 2024 that they were “currently running some tests in populated areas [Suva and Nadi] for 5G ahead of a planned launch in 2025″.
While it’s unlikely that the most remote areas of Fiji will get 5G anytime soon, if you’re planning to hang out in populated areas or Denarau, you might just catch some super-fast internet by the time you take your trip. How’s that for a holiday bonus?

How to Get a Fiji SIM Card
First things first, you need to make sure that your phone is unlocked, is compatible with GSM networks and with frequencies of 700, 900 and/or 1,800 Mhz (and 3,100 Mhz for Vodafone).

Registering Your Mobile Phone Number
As part of the Fiji Government regulations, it is mandatory for all phone numbers to be registered. You will not be able to purchase credit for your SIM card until you have registered your phone number.
You must register with an M-PAiSA agent, which is the case for any Vodafone or Digicel store. Other outlets will usually advertise with a sign if they are an M-PAiSA agent.
Registering is free, and you will be required to present a valid original ID. Any of the following ID can be used: Passport, FNPF Card, Driver’s License, Police ID Card, Military Card, Birth Certificate, Reference Letter, Certificate of Vola Ni Kawa Bula, Marriage Certificate, Citizenship Certificate, Social Welfare Card or Voter Registration ID.
Note that a copy of your ID will be kept for records and you should receive a copy of your registration form.

An alternative way to check your balance is to dial *131# for Vodafone or *555# for Digicel to bring up a USSD menu.
Where to Top Up Your Phone in Fiji
You can top up your phone balance at one of the Vodafone or Digicel outlets (see the “Where to Get a SIM Card in Fiji?” section above for locations) or resellers in Fiji.

The equivalent website for Vodafone is vodafone.com.fj/my-vodafone.

5 Tips for Using Your Phone in Fiji
Finally, here are some quick tips to make the most of your Fiji SIM card and, most importantly, save on precious data.
- If you’re going to Vanua Levu or the Yasawa Islands, choose Vodafone
- If you’re exploring Viti Levu, choose Digicel
- Download the apps so it’s easier to monitor your usage and balance
- Switch off all auto-updates and restrict background data downloads to also save on data
- Switch off data if you’re not using it.
Finally, remember that many of the bundles in Fiji only allow you to call numbers of the same network you are on using the “minutes”. On our last research trip to Fiji, we tried one SIM card of each brand between the two of us.
Incidentally, we quickly ran out of credit and could not call each other. With this in mind, it’s best to go with the same network if there are multiple people in your party that you need to keep connected with.
