The Best Child-Free Things to Do in the Mamanuca Islands

The Mamanuca Islands of Fiji have a bit of a reputation for being a bit too family-friendly. That’s not ideal when you’re looking for rest and rejuvenation. Nevertheless, there have been a few exceptional adult-only retreats developed over the last few years that provide adults with an escape from splashing kids in the pool – check out our favourite Adults-Only Resorts in the Mamanuca Islands. From these resorts, you’ll be treated to a wealth of amazing activities, both on land and on the water, where you’ll either be sharing the experience with who you choose or with like-minded adults. Take a look at the list below for all the amazing adult-only activities in the Mamanuca Islands. Additionally, there are some ideas for adult-only escapes even if you’re staying in one of the family resorts.

While you’re here, don’t miss our Adults-Only Guide to the Mamanuca Islands to help plan a full child-free vacation!

Table of Contents

1. Indulge in One of the Mamanucas’ Spas

Whether you stay in an adults-only resort or not, one place you know you can escape to for some peace and quiet is your resort’s spa. For a bit of spa inspiration, try the Tadrai Island Resort’s Wai Siliva Spa, where you get to choose your treatment setting on this 60-acre (25 ha) island. Or how about a couples’ massage mixed with natural Fijian spa products at the Tropica Day Spa of the Tropica Island Resort? Check out all your options in our 10 Best Spas in the Mamanuca Islands.

2. Cruise Out to Local Sandbars for Sensational Snorkelling

The underwater world among the coral reefs is a must-see in Fiji! While snorkelling is available for all types of holidaymakers, adult-only resorts have reefs for snorkelling just off the beaches, as well as boat trips to some of the best outer reefs in the Mamanucas. Guided snorkelling trips are always a great option with resorts such as Tropica Island Resort’s amazing sandbar snorkelling trip or Lomani Island Resort‘s trips to exotic coral gardens.

Another way to hit the snorkelling spots without kids around is on a private boat charter. Most depart from Port Denarau, like these 10 Best Sailing Charters in Fiji, but you can also find a few private options like Salty Dog Adventures (Land and Sea Tours) at Naisoso Marina and Vuda Water Taxi & Island Hopping Fiji at Vuda Marina – both within driving distance of Nadi. For more excursion ideas, check out The Best Day Trips from the Mamanuca Islands.

Location: Tropica – Malolo Island, the southwestern region of the Mamanuca Islands. Lomani – Malolo Lailai Island, the southwestern region of the Mamanuca Islands. Salty Dog Adventures – Naisoso Marina, approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) west of Nadi Airport. Vuda Water Taxi – Vuda Marina, Vuda Point, approximately 15 km (mi) north of Nadi Airport.

3. Scuba Dive in One of the Mamanucas’ 30 Dive Sites

Feeling adventurous? Don’t miss the stunning tropical underwater world in the depths of the Mamanucas. While all resorts offer diving experiences, children can only start diving if they are over 10 years old. Even with that being the case, older kids are usually the ones going for it, making for a more adult-only environment. If you’re looking for diving with adult-only resorts, Subsurface Fiji works with Tropica Island and Likuliku Lagoon Resort to take adventure-seekers to the ocean-side barrier reefs to swim with dolphins, manta rays, turtles and large pelagic fish. Alternatively, Matamanoa Resort works with Purple Turtle, offering adults a range of PADI dive courses, including freediving, and trips to over 30 dive sites in the Mamanucas. Learn more about these operators and more in The Guide to Scuba Diving in Fiji, as well as the top dive sites in the 10 Best Places to Scuba Dive in Fiji.

Location: Almost all resorts in the Mamanuca Islands work closely with local dive operators or have their own dive shop – the latter can be found in the 20 Best Dive Resorts in Fiji.

Many of the island resorts in the Mamanuca Islands can point you in the direction of exceptional hiking trails. Delve into the island’s best natural spots on the trails of the adult-only Likiliku Lagoon Resort to Jona’s Lookout, the Ridge Track and along Naivaka Beach. More stunning walking trails await on the private island of Matamanoa Island. For walking with purpose, check out the medicine walk on the adults-only Tokoriki Island Resort.

5. Treat That Special Someone to a Private Beach Picnic

Dine with only the person/people you choose on one of the private dining experiences in the Mamanuca Islands. A popular option is a private beach picnic lunch and Campagne with the Tokoriki Island Resort. You’ll be transported to the serene Monu Island for four hours of beachcombing, snorkelling and indulging in divine food. However, just about every resort in the Mamanuca Islands has its own version of a private dining experience, so be sure to enquire.

Intermediate to experienced surfers will find some of the most challenging waves in the South Pacific only a short boat ride from their resort – learn more about it in our 10 Best Surf Spots in the Mamanuca Islands. The best adult-only resorts for surf excursions are the Lomani Island Resort and Tadrai Island Resort. The latter also offers surf lessons. 7. Hire a Fishing Charter to Tackle the Monsters of the Deep

There’s no need to share the boat with excitable families. Charter your own fishing vessel, guide, and equipment, and enjoy your own fishing trip as relaxing or challenging as you like. The adults-only Tropica Island Resort caters to first-timers with fun handline fishing, as well as giving experienced anglers their next challenge with game and sports fishing, while the Mamanuca resorts listed in the 10 Best Fishing Resorts in Fiji are great bases for fishing. You can even experience fishing in the Mamanucas from the mainland with one of the 10 Best Fishing Charters in Denarau.

8. Get Competitive with the Sports Courts of Your Adults-Only Resort

The Mamanuca’s adults-only resorts give you a ton of fun ways to get competitive, with many having complimentary access to tennis courts, beach volleyball, beach cricket, 9-hole golf courses and much more. The Matamanoa Island Resort has an incredible range of land sports to get stuck into, including beach soccer, petanque, touch rugby, table tennis, board games and “after-dinner games”.

Location: Matamanoa – Matamanoa Island, western region of the Mamanuca Islands.

9. Go on a Dolphin Safari or an Island Excursion

There’s so much to discover beyond the confines of your resort, so get out on the water and start exploring! Popular trips include excursions to Seventh Heaven and Cloud 9 floating bars, which, although not child-free, are a mostly adult crowd. You can also escape to the serene Malamala Beach Club, which offers plenty of opportunities to escape the crowds between the adults-only pool and the private beach cabanas. We also like the dolphin safaris arranged by the adults-only Lomani Island Resort.

Location: Tours to Malamala, Seventh Heaven and Cloud 9 depart from Port Denarau, Denarau Island, Nadi, west coast of Viti Levu. Lomani – Malolo Lailai Island, the southwestern region of the Mamanuca Islands.

10. Work Out in the Gym or Fitness Centre

Another facility to escape the kids in any resort is usually within the resort’s fitness centre. But if you want to ensure your workout is exclusively adults-only, then there’s plenty of space for fitness on Tokoriki Island, especially at their fitness platform with TRX straps. Alternatively, check out the 24-hour beachfront bure (bungalow) gym at the Likiliku Resort.

Location: Likuliku – Malolo Island, the southwestern region of the Mamanuca Islands. Tokoriki – Tokoriki Island, the central region of the Mamanuca Islands.
