How to Get Around Fiji in 7 Days

The 7-day honeymoon and romance itinerary below involves a little road travel but mostly overwater travel. Here is a quick rundown of how to get around Fiji.

Interisland Transport in Fiji

The majority of this 7-day itinerary involves island-hopping in the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. While the fast catamaran ferries provide a more affordable option to get between islands and Port Denarau, water taxis provide a more private experience that may be appealing for a special occasion like a honeymoon. Check out the 5 Ways to Get to the Mamanuca Islands for more information. To get back from the Yasawa Islands, we recommend a helicopter/seaplane transfer for a special honeymoon experience. Find out more in the 5 Ways to Get to the Yasawa Islands.

Road Transport in Fiji

The first day of this itinerary will require you to take road transport to Denarau Island from Nadi International Airport. This can be done by taxi, private resort transfers and even the bus. Find out more in the 5 Ways to Get to Denarau Island.

For all of your transport options across the islands, not limited to the most appropriate for couples, check out the Fiji Transport Guide: 20 Best Ways to Get Around Fiji.

Day 1 – Nadi International Airport to Denarau Island

Travel Time: 20 minutes

Welcome to Fiji! Before you start your week of island-hopping, we recommend getting over your flight at one of the fabulous five-star resorts on Denarau Island. The manmade island connected to Fiji’s mainland is a mere 20 minutes from the airport, so you’ll be transitioning into “Fiji time” in no time. Each resort is connected by a walkway or the hop-on hop-off “Bula Bus”, making resort-hopping fun. You could also relax by the pool, perhaps treat yourself to a couples’ massage, and more following our recommendations below!

Day 2 – Denarau Island to the Mamanuca Islands

Travel time: 35-45 minutes by water taxi or catamaran ferry

It’s time to leave the little bubble of Denarau Island behind and start discovering some of the idyllic islands that you came to Fiji to see. The Mamanuca Islands is a group of 20-something islands scattered across turquoise waters. Each island is small, with an interior of swaying coconut palms or an ancient volcanic peak. There’s an island resort in the Mamanucas to suit all budgets, whether you’re looking for a down-to-earth adventure in a backpacker resort or absolute luxury in an adults-only retreat. Check out your options below and relax for your first night on the Mamanuca Islands.

Days 3 & 4 – Relax in the Mamanuca Islands

The Mamanucas make a beautiful setting for romance with its glistening waters, soft sands and balmy ocean breeze. Complimentary activities like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking or hiking make an intimate way to explore your surroundings – just the two of you. Or how about treating yourselves to a special experience like a secluded beach picnic where your resort will organise transport and a gourmet lunch to take with you? Or, for more active couples, how about strengthening your bond by learning a new skill together, such as scuba diving? PADI Open Water courses take 3-4 days to complete and can be transferred to another PADI dive centre (of which there are many in Fiji) if you don’t finish it during your stay in the Mamanucas.

Day 5 – Mamanuca Islands to the Yasawa Islands

Travel time: 1 hr 15 mins-3 hrs 45 mins

This morning, hop back on your water taxi or the South Sea Cruises ferry to your next destination: the remote Yasawa Islands. You’ll notice how the islands are slightly larger with more dramatic scenery here, where resorts and Fijian villages often share the same island, so immersing in the Fijian culture is effortless. Get settled into your Yasawa Islands resort. Again, there’s a real mix of affordable resorts with utterly romantic “honeymoon bures” to luxurious private island resorts.

There’s nothing like seeing the islands and coral reefs decorating the ocean from above – a special experience to share with your loved one. Your flight will bring you straight back to Nadi International Airport, making it simple to catch your flight out of Fiji.
