Either enjoy a scenic flight over the islands via one of the domestic flights or enhance the journey by hiring your own fixed-wing aircraft.
Charter Flights to Taveuni
Make sure your travel is “adult only” by booking a charter flight. Seaplane and fixed-wing flights are available to selected resorts on Taveuni and its surrounding islands. Learn more about charter flights in our guide, Where to Hire a Plane or Seaplane in Fiji.

Still rather intimate on a 16-seater plane, a more affordable way to get to Taveuni via a domestic flight from Nadi International Airport and Nausori Airport in Suva. Flights arrive at Matei Airport on Taveuni, which takes approximately 1 hr 15 mins from Nadi and 50 minutes from Suva. How to Get Around Taveuni
Most resorts on Taveuni will provide their own airport transfer service between the resort and Matei Airport. This will be road transport if the resort is based on Taveuni or boat transport if based on one of the off-shore islands such as Qamea Island or Matangi Island. Learn more about what to expect in Fiji Airports: Your Airport Transfer Options.
An easy way to see many of the sights around Taveuni is by taking a sightseeing tour. Many of the resorts offer tours to the highlights, and transportation is included. If not, they’ll arrange for a local tour guide to take you around, such as with Bay Adventures and Lata Singh’s Travel & Tours (don’t worry, you’re usually the only ones on the tour). Taveuni certainly has plenty to see on a self-drive tour, which you can make happen with the island’s car rental companies: Ruz Hire Services and Aloha Taveuni Rentals & Tours. While most of the coastal road on Taveuni is sealed, note that it gets pretty rough along the southwest coast of Tavenui towards Paradise Taveuni – the bus manages it; you’ll have to take it easy. Unlike elsewhere in Fiji, Taveuni is a much-preferred destination for adult travellers compared to families. Nevertheless, if you want to ensure a real adult-only experience, then here are a few suggestions for adult-only activities on Taveuni and its surrounding islands.
Adult-Only Water Activities on Taveuni
From November to April, the waves off the coast of Qamea and Matangi islands are pumping, making the adult-only resorts on the islands the perfect base for a surf holiday. Needless to say, the reef breaks, best left to the intermediate to experienced surfers, are uncrowded and free from children. Learn more about the top surf breaks in the 5 Surf Spots in Taveuni. Aside from the adults-only Matangi Private Island Resort and Qamea Resort & Spa, surf trips can also be organised with Tides Reach Resort and Maqai Beach Eco Resort.
Let the watersports continue with private kiteboarding lessons at Vacala Bay Resort. There’s hardly a better place to learn the thrills of harnessing the elements than the warm crystal clear waters off Taveuni. Their KITE FIJI School offers lessons in a safe sandy bottom bay with a few fun wave kickers to tackle once you progress.
With the thought in mind that children can’t scuba dive in Fiji until they are 10+ years old, scuba diving is a Taveuni activity to rely on to escape the littlies. In fact, you’ll be transported to a captivating new world where sound has an entirely new meaning altogether. While Fiji is famed for its soft coral gardens, Taveuni is home to some of the best dive sites, especially at Rainbow Reef, Vuna Lagoon and the reefs surrounding Qamea Island. Almost all resorts offer their own dive operation, either PADI or SSI-affiliated or have connections with local dive operators to get you geared up, transported and guided.
Adult-Only Land Activities on Taveuni
We can hardly think of a more relaxing tropical destination to practice yoga than the island of Taveuni… And the resorts here know that too, with many offering yoga classes and having a dedicated yoga space on their property. The adults-only Qamea Resort & Spa is one example, featuring a beachfront yoga sala with mats, blocks and straps available for self-guided practice. On the same island, Maqai Beach Eco Resort has a resident yoga and pilates instructor offering daily classes and one-on-one tuition to guests. And on Taveuni, Taveuni Island Resort & Spa also boasts an oceanview yoga deck just outside of their spa complex to enhance relaxation. Learn more about yoga in Fiji in the 10 Beautiful Places to Experience Yoga in Fiji.
On the theme of relaxation, the resort day spas are a surefire way to find complete tranquillity. The luxury resorts on Taveuni boast fantastic spas where Fijian massages combined with natural local products are a staple among each resort’s signature treatments. In fact, the adult-only Qamea Resort & Spa boasts one of the best day spas in Fiji, featuring an elevated spa deck in the jungle. Find out more about getting utterly pampered on Taveuni with our 10 Best Spas on Taveuni.
Many travellers come to Taveuni especially for hiking in the tropical jungles and birdwatching. Normally, we would recommend walking as an excellent adult-only experience on most of Fiji’s islands. However, in the height of the busy season, the “must-do” walks in the Bouma National Heritage Park, apart from an early morning stroll to Des Voeux Peak and Lake Tagimaucia, sure won’t feel like an adults-only experience. For this reason, we recommend the islands of Qamea, Matangi and Laucala for secluded hiking in breathtaking rainforests, coconut plantations and beaches. All of these islands have resorts, so be sure to ask about local hiking trails and the best birdwatching spots nearby. Or simply take a look at the 10 Best Walks & Hikes on Taveuni.
More Things to Do on Taveuni
The rest of your time on Taveuni can be enjoyed by indulging in a spa treatment, taking a scenic sunset cruise, or enjoying a private candlelit dinner on the beach, which you can find out more about in the 10 Adults-Only Activities on Taveuni. While crowded restaurants are not really an issue here on Taveuni, you can still set the tone for a romantic meal or an adult-only get-together by dining at restaurants exclusively for adults.
Adult-Only Restaurants
Aside from private dining (see below), dining at one of Taveuni’s adult-only resorts is where you will experience dining free from tantrums and highchairs. Try real Fijian food artfully presented at the Matangi Private Island Resort, where local ingredients such as tapioca, taro, breadfruit, coconut and fresh fish are incorporated into every dish. Plus, don’t miss their weekly “lovo” feast where food is traditionally slow-cooked in an underground oven. Those staying on Qamea Island can enjoy the adult-only dining of the Bure Kalau at the Qamea Resort & Spa where guests can enjoy sunset cocktails and afternoon tea every day before dinner.
Private Dining
The way to ensure an adults-only dining experience anywhere in the world is to indulge in private dining. With just the two of you, private dining really sets the scene whether it’s for a special occasion or to simply enjoy each other’s company. A special experience on the Taveuni islands is a private beach picnic. Qamea Resort offers trips to a secluded beach reserved just for you accompanied by a picnic hamper of gourmet food, wine or beer. On Matangi Island, you can enjoy a private candlelit dinner under the stars, while those staying at the private accommodation of Vacala Bay Resort can choose a number of dining locations, being the only guests at the resort.
