Ferry and Flight Times in Fiji
You can’t come to an archipelago of 333 islands and not do some island-hopping! Fiji’s eight island groups have their own culture, landscapes and attractions to discover, each a unique destination in their own right. But how long does it take to travel around Fiji? We go over the travel times between the island groups in Fiji in the guide below.
Note that the below-listed travel times are to the main hubs of each island group or where the most frequent ferry/flights depart from.

How to Get Around Fiji
Unless you have your own sailing yacht or are on a cruise, there are two ways to get between the island groups of Fiji: ferries and flights.
Ferries in Fiji
The inter-island ferries are the cheapest way to get between island groups in Fiji. There are multiple types of ferries, from high-speed catamarans to slow cargo/vehicle/passenger ferries. Learn about taking the ferries in The Guide to Travelling in Fiji by Ferry.
Flights in Fiji
Domestic flights are a faster way of getting between the island groups with the two domestic carriers: Fiji Airways and Northern Air. Flight and Ferry Times to Viti Levu
Viti Levu is the main island of Fiji. It is the main travel hub of the islands, home to Fiji’s two international airports: Nadi International Airport and Nausori International Airport in Suva. Both of these airports have regular flights to Fiji’s other island groups.
Much of Fiji’s water transport also connects in Viti Levu. Ferries to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands go back and forth from Port Denarau near Nadi, while ferries to Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu and the Lomaiviti Islands depart from wharves surrounding Suva.
Travel Times to Viti Levu from:
- Yasawa Islands: 30 mins flight / 1 hour – 4h30mins ferry
- Mamanuca Islands: 10 mins flight / 30mins – 1-hour ferry
- Lomaiviti Islands: 12 mins flight / 3h30mins – 4 hours ferry
- Vanua Levu: 1h10mins flight / 6 – 12 hours ferry
- Taveuni: 1h25mins flight / 14 – 16 hours ferry
- Kadavu: 50 mins flight / 7 – 12 hours ferry
- Lau Islands: 1-hour – 1h15mins flight.
Flight and Ferry Times to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands

Travel Times to the Mamanuca Islands from:
- Viti Levu: 10 mins flight / 30mins – 1-hour ferry.
Travel Times to the Yasawa Islands from:
- Viti Levu: 30 mins flight / 1 hour – 4h30mins ferry.
Flight and Ferry Times to Vanua Levu and Taveuni
Vanua Levu has a regular flight schedule with two airports on the island, Labasa Airport and Savusavu Airport, while the neighbouring Taveuni is home to the Matei Airport. All of these airports have frequent flights connecting to Nadi International Airport and Nausori International Airport in Viti Levu.
Alternatively, daily ferries run between Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, as well as Vanua Levu and Taveuni, while a ferry goes between Viti Levu and Taveuni three times a week. All ferry trips to these islands include bus travel.

- Viti Levu: 1h10mins flight / 6 – 12 hours ferry
- Taveuni: 1h30mins – 2 hours ferry
- Lomaiviti Islands: 14 – 16 hours ferry.
Travel Times to Taveuni from:
- Viti Levu: 1h25mins flight / 14 – 16 hours ferry
- Vanua Levu: 1h30mins – 2 hours ferry.
Flight and Ferry Times to the Lomaiviti Islands
The Lomaiviti Islands sit off the eastern shores of Viti Levu, where it’s best to fly or take the ferry from Suva to get to. Ovalau is the most popular island to visit by plane or ferry, while Koro also has a weekly flight and ferry service from Suva. Travel Times to the Lomaiviti Islands from:
- (to Ovalau) Viti Levu: 12 mins flight / 3h30mins – 4 hours ferry
- (to Koro) Viti Levu: 45 mins flight / 12 hours ferry
- Vanua Levu: 14 – 16 hours ferry.
Flight and Ferry Times to Kadavu
Flights from Nadi International Airport in Viti Levu depart four to six times a week, while flights from Nausori Airport in Suva operate on Mondays. All flights arrive at Vunisea Airport in Kadavu. Flight and Ferry Times to the Lau Islands
Nausori Airport in Suva is your gateway to the Lau Islands. Fiji Airways operates scheduled flights to Cicia in Northern Lau on Tuesdays, Lakeba in Southern Lau on Thursdays, and Vanua Balavu in Northern Lau on Wednesdays, all returning the same day. While there are no “ferries” to the Lau Islands, as such, there are cargo ships that depart from Suva to the Lau Islands around once a week taking 6 – 7 days to go from island to island and return to Suva.
