You know who you want to spend the rest of your life with, you know you want to start it in beautiful Fiji, but how can you make this all work? Relax, embrace “Fiji time“, and take a look at this guide to everything you need to know about getting married in Fiji.

From choosing an island to working out the legalities, planning a wedding in Fiji has a lot to think about. However, thanks to the array of wedding packages available across the islands, the guesswork is mostly taken out of organising a destination wedding. Let us guide you through the best time to get married, the best places, the best wedding packages and more in this complete wedding guide to Fiji.

Table of Contents

10 Reasons to Get Married in Fiji

Check out some of the reasons why you might want to consider tying the knot in the South Pacific with this list of reasons for having a destination wedding in Fiji.

  1. For the beautiful sandy beaches, turquoise waters and lush tropical rainforest. And it’s not just sand and sea, as Fiji also hides a rugged interior on its larger islands, scattered with waterfalls, deep canyons and verdant rainforest. Any one of these landscapes can feature in your wedding ceremony.
  2. There is a huge choice of wedding packages. Wedding packages take the guesswork out of planning a destination wedding, often including all the essentials, like organising the Marriage License, the marriage celebrant, witnesses, a decorated wedding ceremony venue and much more! They’ll even organise the food, Fijian flower girls, Fijian warriors, a wedding cake and more.
  3. A marriage certificate from Fiji is internationally recognised. Your Marriage Certificate in Fiji will be sent to the Department of Foreign Affairs to obtain the Apostille Seal.
  4. The weather is sunny and warm. Fiji experiences warm and soothing temperatures year-round. There are two distinct seasons: the dry season (winter) and the wet season (summer), with the dry season being the most popular time for couples to tie the knot in Fiji.
  5. The Fijian cultural aspects make a memorable addition to your wedding day. Adding a Fijian touch certainly makes for a memorable and exotic experience. Fijian-inspired inclusions with many wedding packages often feature a Fijian village choir, tribal drumming, Fijian meke dancing, a kava ceremony or a traditional lovo feast for your wedding reception.
  6. It’s often cheaper than getting married at home in front of your family and friends. However, a destination wedding often means a limited guest list or simply no guest list at all! With that, the overall cost of the wedding is cut down considerably when you don’t have to worry about hiring a large venue, food for everyone and entertainment. Plus, your wedding and honeymoon are all rolled into one.
  7. Privacy is easy to find. With adult-only resorts, boutique resorts and even private island excursions, finding unparalleled intimacy and seclusion is effortless in Fiji. You can even amp up the experience at one of the islands’ luxury resorts, often featuring private plunge pools and access to the beach.
  8. It’s different. How many of your friends have had an island wedding? We thought so. Have a barefoot wedding with your toes in the sand, walk down the aisle to harmonious Fijian singers, say “I do” by a glorious waterfall, or on a floating platform surrounded by coral.
  9. Fiji is full of positivity. The start of the rest of your lives together should get off on the right foot, full of positivity. Swap the stress of a home wedding with family politics and weather woes with tropical sunshine and the smiling faces of the local Fijians. Fijians are often described as some of the friendliest and happiest people on the planet, which will give any couple the boost they need for their big day.
  10. You can jump straight into your honeymoon! Once you’ve said your “I dos”, well, you’re already here! Start doing all the amazing honeymoon activities that Fiji has in store, from scuba diving to couples spa treatments to sunset cruises and much more!

Now that you’re inevitably convinced, let’s jump into the finer details of planning a wedding in Fiji…

When is the Best Time to Get Married in Fiji?

So you know that you are ready to tie the knot, but the big question is when? For planning when to have your wedding in Fiji, you need to consider your ideal weather, the cost of resorts and their wedding packages, Fiji’s peak tourist seasons, and more. Plus, give yourself enough time to visit a registry office to get your Marriage License when you arrive in Fiji.

You might want to consider what the best time for you to have a wedding in Fiji is. Fiji has two distinct seasons: the wet season (summer) and the dry season (winter). The dry season is the most popular time for couples to get married in Fiji, with less chance of downpours to spoil your outside feet-in-the-sand wedding ceremony. However, that doesn’t mean that the wet season has constant rain, so some couples might be willing to take the chance in the wet season in exchange for huge discounted wedding packages or often “free wedding packages” if you stay at the resort for at least five days, for example. Jump into this subject in more detail in The Best Time to Visit Fiji: A Month-by-Month Guide.

Getting Married in the Dry Season

Months: June, July, August, September, October and November
Temperature: 19-29°C (66-84°F)
Rainfall: 70-150mm (2.8-6″)

The dry season is when most couples choose to get married in Fiji. With lower chances of rain on your wedding day combined with comfortably warm temperatures, the weather aspect of the dry season is what many consider perfect for an island wedding. However, the dry season is when you will see resorts and airfares at their peak, especially over the Australian and New Zealand school holidays in July and August. With that, you will also experience some of Fiji’s larger resorts feeling “crowded”, but that’s not really an issue if you choose perhaps a boutique resort or an adults-only resort to get married in. Better deals and quieter resorts are experienced in October and November.

The Benefits of Getting Married in the Dry Season
  • The weather is more likely to be sunny and beautiful
  • The humidity is low, making it comfortable to wear a wedding dress
  • It makes a warm retreat from the cold winter in some of the lower Southern Hemisphere countries
  • It’s the best season for surfing, scuba diving and swimming with manta rays.

Getting Married in the Wet Season

Months: December, January, February, March, April and May
Temperature: 22-33°C (72-91°F)
Rainfall: 180-310mm (2.8-6″)

Fiji’s “summer” season is the wettest time of the year, with frequent rainfall and a risk of cyclones around February. While there is a greater risk of rain on your wedding day during the wet season, rainfall patterns in Fiji tend to be short bursts, so it’s often just the case of “waiting the rain out” if having a ceremony outside. Alternatively, many of the resorts across Fiji offer indoor alternatives, such as chapels, as a backup. Nevertheless, Fiji still experiences a lot of sunshine between the showers, still giving couples the chance to get those dreamy wedding photos and backdrops for their big day.

There are also a lot of benefits to having a wedding during Fiji’s wet season, from discounted airfares to lower resort rates. What’s more, many resorts offer “free wedding packages” if couples stay at least a few days during the wet season, for instance, at Namale Resort & Spa and Likuliku Lagoon Resort.

Note that Fiji does experience a busy period during the wet season, around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays, when airfares and hotel rates temporarily rise.

Benefits of Getting Married in the Wet Season

  • There are cheaper resort rates
  • You’re more likely to get cheaper airfares
  • There’s the opportunity for discounted or free wedding packages
  • Feel like you have the islands to yourselves

Choosing a Date to Arrive in Fiji for Your Wedding

Once you have “a time” to get married in Fiji narrowed down to a season, and even once you’ve decided on the best month to get married in Fiji, you’ll need to decide on an arrival date. The important thing to remember is to leave enough time to get over the jet lag (if applicable), settle into your resort, and visit a registry office in person to get your Marriage License. With all that in mind, couples should arrive in Fiji at least three before the wedding day.

Note that registry offices are closed on weekends and public holidays, so you may need to take this into consideration when planning what day to arrive in Fiji.

Making Your Marriage in Fiji Legal

To legally marry in Fiji, couples must meet specific conditions and obtain a Marriage License.

Key requirements include being 18 or older, single or legally free to marry, and physically present for the ceremony. Essential documents needed are birth certificates, passports with valid visas, and a single status certificate. Non-residents must obtain this certificate from their home country’s registry.

The process involves sending scanned documents to Fiji’s BMD registry and then visiting in person upon arrival to complete the license application. Your Marriage License is valid for 28 days.

During the ceremony, both partners, two witnesses (21+), and the celebrant must sign the Marriage Certificate. One copy is kept by the couple, while another is registered and receives an Apostille Seal for international recognition.

How Much Does it Cost to Get Married in Fiji?

Weddings in Fiji vary in cost depending on whether you’re eloping or bringing the whole tribe for a wedding reception. As weddings abroad tend to involve only your nearest and dearest, we usually find that weddings in Fiji are a little more affordable than having extravagant weddings at home.

Here are some typical wedding costs in Fiji. Note that prices are approximate and that different wedding packages include different things, such as a wedding cake, for instance, which might not be an additional cost.

  • Basic elopement package – FJ$2,000-$4,000
  • Wedding ceremony + reception package (30 guests) – FJ$9,000-$22,000
  • Reception venue hire – FJ$1,500-$2,000
  • Catering (buffet per person) – FJ$235
  • Hair and make-up bridal package – FJ$350
  • Wedding cake – FJ$500-$1,200+
  • Photography package – FJ$3,000-$10,000

Of course, if your wedding package doesn’t include the couples’ accommodation and other activities you might like to do, then you’ll need to factor these costs into your budget. Take a look at How Much Does a Trip to Fiji Cost? for other typical costs associated with a trip to Fiji.

Remember that you’ll also want to factor in costs like the wedding dress, rings, etc., which you’ll usually want to bring with you to Fiji.
