© FijiPocketGuide.comHow to Get Around Fiji in 10 Days
The itinerary below involves both road and overwater travel. Here is a quick rundown of how to get around Fiji with a family.
Road Transport in Fiji
The two islands mentioned on this itinerary, Viti Levu and Taveuni, both have roads with transport, including public buses, taxis and car rentals. Public buses are your cheapest transport option and are a good way to get between Nadi and Suva on Viti Levu, especially when using air-conditioned express buses.
Taxis take the stress out of driving in a foreign country, but agree on a price before making long trips, as metres are not used outside of Nadi and Suva.
Finally, there is a wide range of car rentals on Viti Levu, but less so on Taveuni. Nevertheless, car rentals are a popular choice for their convenience. Finally, airport transfers to and from your resort can fill the gaps.
Interisland Transport in Fiji
While ferries provide cheap passage between islands, the most appropriate transport for families is domestic flights. The itinerary below includes two domestic flights, which are in small planes, so be sure to book as soon as possible.
Note that the domestic luggage allowance has tighter limitations than your international flight to Fiji, so be careful not to overpack (or book your domestic flight along with your international flight to get an international baggage allowance for all flights).
We do include one ferry crossing in this itinerary between Taveuni, which is a better ferry crossing option for kids, as the journey is less than two hours.
For all of your transport options across the islands, not limited to the most appropriate for families, check out the Fiji Transport Guide: 20 Best Ways to Get Around Fiji.

Drive/flight time: 40 minutes/1 hr 20 mins
You’ve experienced the mainland of Fiji, but now discover a different pace of life and pristine landscapes of Fiji’s outer islands. Taveuni is nicknamed the “garden island” due to its fertile volcanic soils harbouring verdant rainforests. The scuba diving around the island is also fantastic, with the famed Rainbow Reef right on its doorstep.
Plus, about 80% of the island is covered in the breathtaking Bouma National Heritage Park. More on that later, but for now, take your flight from Nausori Airport to Matei Airport on Taveuni and get settled in your family-friendly accommodation.
