How to Get Around Fiji in 10 Days

The 10-day itinerary below involves both road and overwater travel. Here is a quick rundown of how to get around Fiji on an adults-only holiday.

Road Transport in Fiji

Three of the islands mentioned on this itinerary have roads: Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni. While airport transfers organised by some resorts provide an easy and intimate way to get around, taxis are also an option on these islands.

Interisland Transport in Fiji

This adults-only itinerary for Fiji includes fast catamaran ferries between Viti Levu and the Mamanuca Islands. On the other hand, water taxis provide a more private adults-only experience at a premium rate.

Alternatively, you can experience days 2 to 4 of this itinerary on the adults-only Blue Lagoon Cruises, which explores this region – see Cruises Around Fiji: A Full Small-Ship Cruise Comparison to learn more.

Getting between Viti LevuVanua Levu, and Taveuni requires taking a domestic scheduled flight, as well as the option for scenic seaplane/helicopter flights. More details are mentioned on each day of the itinerary where appropriate.

For all of your transport options across the islands, check out the Fiji Transport Guide: 20 Best Ways to Get Around Fiji.

Day 1 – Nadi International Airport to Denarau Island

Travel Time: 20 minutes

Welcome to the islands of Fiji! A great place to get over the flight and start transitioning into “Fiji time” is Denarau Island. It’s one of Fiji’s most luxurious hubs with a range of five-star resorts (resort-hopping is a must), most of which have exclusive adult-only areas with an adults-only swimming pool, a bar and a restaurant.

Aside from that, Denarau Island has no lack of spas, gyms and yoga classes to enjoy while free of youngsters. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, how about something crazy like skydiving?!

Day 2 – Denarau Island to the Mamanuca Islands

Travel time: 35-45 minutes

It’s time to leave the little luxury bubble of Denarau Island and make your way to see some of those famous islands of the Fiji archipelago!

Catch a catamaran ferry from Port Denarau to your chosen Mamanuca Islands adults-only resort, where you’ll be secluded on an island with only a handful of other guests; you’re sure to find the tranquillity you’re searching for. Since this is such a stunning area of Fiji, we’ve ensured you’ve a few days on the islands.

Most adults-only resorts offer tours that return just in time for happy hour so you can enjoy tropical cocktails or refreshing Fiji beers as you watch the sun dip behind the ocean.

Day 6 – Nadi to Savusavu (Vanua Levu)

Travel time: 1 hr 10 mins

Swap the bustling city of Nadi and the small islands of the Mamanucas for some of Fiji’s wilder, less-visited islands, starting with Vanua Levu.

Vanua Levu is Fiji’s second-largest island with a mix of Fijian and Indo-Fijian cultures, a landscape that is volcanic, coated in forest, sugar cane and coconut plantations, and some of the most impressive seascapes found across Fiji. You’ll have time to explore most of it in the next coming days.

First, enjoy your flight from Nadi International Airport to Savusavu Airport, where your resort will provide a transfer service to their little piece of paradise. Alternatively, taxis are available from the airport.

The Main Bure Restaurant offers nightly dinners and cocktail hours, announced by the traditional lali drum, and features cultural entertainment nights.

For a more casual atmosphere, head to the Walu Restaurant on the east end of the grounds.

Guests at the Koro Sun Resort can enjoy Asian-Fusion cuisine and fresh seafood at the adults-only Latitude 17 restaurant, perched on the water’s edge. We’ll have more dining recommendations for you tomorrow!

Days 7 – Explore Savusavu and Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu is the perfect retreat for adults, being much less visited than Fiji’s other islands but no less stunning. Make the most of the tranquil surroundings matched with the soothing tropical weather in one of the rainforest spas or wellness retreats.

There are romantic private experiences for couples, such as a sandbar picnic or unique destination dining. Alternatively, if you want to mingle with the locals, check out the bars in Savusavu or Labasa.

If you’re feeling adventurous, discover some of the amazing underwater scenery of the Namena Marine Reserve. Scuba diving is a big deal here, so arranging a trip with your resort is effortless.

Alternatively, the marine life can be enjoyed on dolphin cruises in Natewa Bay or snorkelling on dive trips or at Split Rock outside of the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort.

It’s time to make your way to Fiji’s “Garden Island”, Taveuni! The island, awash in forest, volcanic peaks and waterfalls, is surrounded by a couple of adults-only resorts on off-shore islands, which will make a memorable last few days of your time in Fiji.

But first, you need to get there on the Taveuni Princess, which involves a scenic bus trip to Buca Bay and then a sail across the Somosomo Strait. From Taveuni, the adult-only resorts offer road and boat transfers, while the private luxury villas will transport you to your villa.

Try real Fijian food artfully presented at the Matangi Private Island Resort, where local ingredients such as tapioca, taro, breadfruit, coconut and fresh fish are incorporated into every dish.

Plus, don’t miss their weekly “lovo” feast where food is traditionally slow-cooked in an underground oven. Those staying on Qamea Island can enjoy the adult-only dining of the Bure Kalau at the Qamea Resort & Spa where guests can enjoy sunset cocktails and afternoon tea every day before dinner.
